A most unconventional double-act! It’s Edinburgh, 1820, and Thomas De Quincey, the flawed English man of letters and laudanum addict, sits shivering in his dingy lodgings beneath a Grassmarket brothel. Driven by demons from without and within, he depends on his simple-minded servant Willie to bring him the narcotic he craves whilst he scribbles desperately to meet a deadline which has already passed.
Laugh-out-loud funny, tragic and deeply moving, this is an powerful and compelling portrait of a bizarre and symbiotic relationship.
